There is a national dress in Bhutan. This is compulsory for everyone to wear. The men wear a Kho (pronounced Go). The Kho is a long robe tied around the mans waist with a slim belt. A silk or cotton vest with cuffs is worn underneath. At the waist is a small sword used for chopping meat, betel nut or wood.

The women wear a Kira. An ankle length robe that is made from beautifully coloured finely woven fabrics. Each valley has its own traditional pattern. the ankle length robe is fastened at the waist with belt and silver broaches at the shoulders. Traditional necklaces are fashioned from coral, pearls and turquoise and other precious stones. Traditional shoes are knee length boots embroidered cloth with soft soles but they are only worn at festivals. The every day shoes are western style.
